Honestly, if you've seen all the often-quoted Narrator lines and maybe listened to the soundtrack, then you've already experienced all the best that Darkest Dungeon has to offer.A dungeon crawler is a subgenre of role-playing games, characterized by the exploration of a labyrinthine environment while battling monsters, looking for treasure, and defeating the enemy in aa occasional boss battle. In XCom, a part of your progression is permanent so if you lose late-game characters, you end up with rookies in high-powered gear fighting high-powered enemies, which is a distinctly different experience from the start of a campaign. There is perma-death, but replacing losses results in an experience identical to playing a new campaign from the start, with fresh characters against weak enemies, while the game world stands still and waits as long as you need. You get access to all classes and abilities from the beginning of the game, so your progression also comes down to simply cranking up numbers on your roster. The game is nearly the length of a Long War campaign, but is just a shorter segment repeated three times, with numbers cranked up on enemies each time. The combat is turn-based and doesn't have the complexity of XCOM's position/cover mechanics but ability usage depends a lot on the position of the character in your party lineup and the position of the the enemies in theirs so there is some thinking involved.Īnyway, if your looking for a new game that will treat you like shit and kill your favorite characters, you might want to check out Darkest Dungeon. The missions are sidescrolling dungeon crawls using the map to change direction. There are 15 different classes of mercenary you can recruit with randomly generated names appearances (just recolors really but I think there are mods to expand the palette if you want).

Setting is sort of Gothic horror/Lovecraftian and your main base is a hamlet with various buildings you can upgrade using the resources you get by sending a squad of 4 mercenaries on a mission into or around the grounds of your family's abandoned estate which is now infested with monsters due to unearthing an ancient portal to another realm. It's marketed as "rogue-like" and it isn't really but I have noticed it has a very similar game loop to XCOM. I picked this game up in a steam sale recently.
